Demonym of New Zealand

Kiwi is the nickname used internationally (especially in the Anglosphere) for the inhabitants of New Zealand, as well as the quite common way in which they call themselves. The name derives from a wingless bird of the genus Apteryx native to the archipelago.

The first New Zealanders to be nicknamed Kiwi were the military. The kiwi (bird) is the symbol of all regiments in the country, including those that participated in the Second Boer War, and those that fought alongside the Australian Army in World War II.

After the war, the term was gradually attributed to the entire population.
